========================================================
1. BEFORE INSTALLING REACHOUT
If you have any other remote control software on your
computer, remove it before installing ReachOut.
--------------------------------------------------------
2. CONNECTING TO A WINDOWS NT COMPUTER
When connecting from Windows 3.1 to ReachOut for
Windows NT, your password is case-sensitive. For
example, "PASSWORD" is not the same as "password". Be
sure to type your password with the correct uppercase
and lowercase letters.
At this time, ReachOut for DOS does not support
connections to Windows NT Hosts; for this reason, you
cannot connect to a Windows NT computer through a DOS
gateway. However, a Windows NT computer can connect to
a DOS Host.
--------------------------------------------------------
3. VIDEO DRIVERS
If you are having video problems while using ReachOut
and are using a third party video driver, switch to
standard Windows VGA or SVGA and try using ReachOut
again. If it works correctly, check with the
manufacturer of your video card to see if there is an
updated driver. If not, you can use the Windows VGA or
SVGA driver with ReachOut.
Some video modes may cause the viewer to lose the prompt
in a DOS session running under Windows. If this happens,
press ALT+ENTER to reduce the DOS session to a window.
The DOS prompt will reappear.
You should have no problems using ReachOut when both
computers are running 256 colors. To use more than 256
colors, both computers must be set to the same color
resolution, and both computers must have the same video
driver and card.
CHANGING DISPLAY SETTINGS
On most systems, you can change your computer's color
depth and video resolution using Windows Control Panel
while ReachOut is installed, but not connected, without
any problems. You'll need to restart the computer for
the changes to take effect.
If you are using ReachOut for Windows & DOS under
Windows 95, you may have a utility such as Microsoft
Quickres (a Microsoft Powertoy) to modify your display
settings without restarting your computer. Once ReachOut
is installed, you won't be able to change the color depth
from 256 colors to a larger number (16 bit color). When
you call and connect to a computer, you can change the
video resolution (say from 640x480 to 800x600) of the
computer you are calling from with Quickres, but you
cannot change the video resolution of the computer you
are connected to.
STB LIGHTSPEED 128 DRIVER
The STB LightSpeed 128 (version 1.0) driver is not
compatible with ReachOut. This video card driver
prevents ReachOut from intercepting and transmitting the
video from the computer waiting for calls to the
computer making the call. If you have the
STB LightSpeed 128 video card, you can use ReachOut
successfully if you install the Windows standard VGA or
SVGA driver.
MATROX MILLENIUM DRIVER
While connected to a waiting computer that uses a
Matrox Millennium video driver, the colors displayed on
the viewing window will be dithered. To fix this problem,
install the Power Desk utility that comes with the
driver, and make these changes:
1. Open Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Power Desk icon.
3. On the MGA Settings tab, click Advanced.
4. On the Performance tab, uncheck all check boxes.
5. Close all windows.
--------------------------------------------------------
4. DISABLING WALLPAPER FOR REMOTE CONTROL OPTIMIZATION
You can have ReachOut temporarily disable a waiting
computer's wallpaper, screen saver, and desktop pattern
while it is acting as a Host. This can help speed up
remote control.
TO DISABLE THE HOST'S WALLPAPER, SCREEN SAVER, AND
DESKTOP PATTERN WHILE CONNECTED
1. On the Host computer, exit ReachOut if it is open.
2. Using any text editor, such as Notepad, open the file
REACHOUT.INI.
It is located in your Windows directory.
3. Locate the [reachout.ui] section of REACHOUT.INI.
If this section does not exist, you can create it by
typing the text
[reachout.ui]
on a line by itself.
4. Under the [reachout.ui] heading, type following lines
of text:
DisableWallpaper=1
DisableScreenSaver=1
DisableDekstopPattern=1
5. Save and close REACHOUT.INI.
--------------------------------------------------------
5. TERMINAL EMULATOR PROBLEMS
If your Viewer gets into Terminal Emulator mode by
accident in the middle of a session, your connection is
probably unstable. Check the Troubleshooting sections of
ReachOut Help and the ReachOut for Windows & DOS User's
Guide for suggestions on fixing connection problems.
If you enter any numbers, use the standard number keys
rather than the keypad. The keypad keys are interpreted
as cursor movements no matter what the setting of
NUMLOCK.
--------------------------------------------------------
6. PEN MOUSE DRIVERS
If you have trouble using your pen mouse, try it with
the standard Windows Mouse Driver.
--------------------------------------------------------
7. PUBLIC INSTALLATIONS
If you are having problems doing a public installation
in DOS, try it in Windows by choosing Run from the File
menu and entering INSTALL PUBLIC. If you are upgrading
ReachOut, first remove ReachOut from your computer.
You may need to enter license information the first time
you run the Host or the Viewer.
INSTALL PUBLIC will work on Windows 95 systems. However,
the shared network drive where ReachOut is stored must
be mapped during the public installation and during use
of ReachOut. If you change the drive letter to which the
network drive is mapped, you'll need to uninstall
ReachOut and run INSTALL PUBLIC again.
--------------------------------------------------------
8. CONNECTING FROM A DOS VIEWER
If you connect to a Host, then choose Exit to Local PC
from the Viewer's File menu, you will need to return to
viewing mode before starting Windows on the Host. While
you are exited to the local PC, you are still connected.
Entering WIN to start Windows in this situation starts
your local copy of Windows; it will not allow you to
view the Host.
To return to viewing mode, change to the ReachOut
directory, run VIEW, and then press ESC to return to the
Host.
--------------------------------------------------------
9. RUNNING WINDOWS DURING A DOS CONNECTION
If you connect to a DOS Host and then run Windows, you
won't be able to use ReachOut's Chat and File Manager
until you start the Windows Host program.
--------------------------------------------------------
10. VIRUS CHECKING
During file transfers via ReachOut File Manager, you can
check transferred files for viruses. We've included
virus scanner software for you in your ReachOut
directory.
To download the latest virus pattern file, go to the
Trend Micro Devices home page on the Internet at:
http://www.antivirus.com/pattern_update.html
--------------------------------------------------------
11. SPECIAL WINDOWS KEY COMBINATIONS
During remote control, pressing certain key combinations
while the viewing window is active produces different
results depending upon the version of Windows the calling
computer is running.
Here is how these key combinations behave in
Windows 3.1x:
ALT+TAB cycles through the applications on the
REMOTE computer.
CTRL+ESC activates the REMOTE computer's task list
(or taskbar in Windows 95 or Windows NT).
If you are viewing in full screen mode, pressing
CTRL+ESC also restores the viewing window.
Here is how these key combinations behave in Windows 95:
ALT+TAB cycles through the applications on the
LOCAL computer. To cycle through applications on
the remote computer, use ALT+RIGHT ARROW.
CTRL+ESC activates the LOCAL computer's taskbar. To
activate the remote computer's taskbar or task
list, use ALT+UP ARROW.
On Windows 95, pressing CTRL+ESC does not restore
the viewing window.
--------------------------------------------------------
12. COLOR CURSORS
On a Windows 95 computer that has a color cursor, you'll
see only the standard white pointer while you are running
ReachOut.
--------------------------------------------------------
13. UNINSTALLING REACHOUT
Uninstall removes all ReachOut files, including:
* All program files that aren't in use
* The ReachOut program group and icons
* The ReachOut initialization file in your Windows
folder
Uninstall also removes ReachOut-specific lines from the
SYSTEM.INI file.
If there are files in your ReachOut directory that
ReachOut did not create, Uninstall prompts you to delete
all remaining files in the directory.
TO UNINSTALL REACHOUT:
Double-click the Uninstall icon in the ReachOut program
group.
After it has deleted the ReachOut files, Uninstall
prompts you to restart Windows. Choose Yes to
automatically remove the ReachOut directory.
